Στη συνέχεια, οι συμμετέχοντες στη μελέτη υποβλήθηκαν σε 10λεπτο μασάζ στο ένα από τα κουρασμένα πόδια τους, η επιλογή του οποίου έγινε τυχαία. Οι ειδικοί προχώρησαν σε βιοψία και γενετική ανάλυση δειγμάτων μυϊκού ιστού που ελήφθησαν και από τα δύο πόδια των εθελοντών σε τρεις διαφορετικές φάσεις: πριν από την άσκηση, αμέσως μετά το μασάζ και δυόμισι ώρες αργότερα.

Όπως εξηγούν μέσα από δημοσίευσή τους στην επιθεώρηση «Science Translational Medicine» το μασάζ αμβλύνει την επίδραση των κυτοκινών – μορίων του ανοσοποιητικού συστήματος που συμβάλλουν στην πρόκληση φλεγμονής – ενώ παράλληλα ενισχύει τη βιογένεση των μιτοχονδρίων.
Η παυσίπονη δράση του μασάζ ενδέχεται, κατά τους ερευνητές, να οφείλεται στον ίδιο μηχανισμό που ενεργοποιείται όταν γίνεται λήψη αντιφλεγμονωδών φαρμάκων.
«Τα πιθανά οφέλη του μασάζ θα μπορούσαν να φανούν χρήσιμα σε ευρύ φάσμα περιπτώσεων – από ηλικιωμένους, μέχρι ασθενείς που ταλαιπωρούνται από μυοσκελετικούς τραυματισμούς ή ασθενείς με χρόνια φλεγμονοπάθεια» υπογραμμίζει ο επικεφαλής της μελέτης δρ. Μαρκ Ταρνοπόλσκι.
«Η μελέτη αυτή προσφέρει σημαντικές ενδείξεις σχετικά με το ότι θεραπείες όπως π.χ. το μασάζ, θα μπορούσαν να αποτελούν μέρος της ιατρικής πρακτικής» καταλήγει ο ειδικός.
